Over All Summary-
Charlie and his younger brother, Sam, are good friends. One evening, Charlie's mother, Louise, asked him to watch Sam while she was gone. The two boys were trying to find something to do when Sam suggested the Red Sox versus Yankees game. The boys had a great time together! On the way home, Charlie and Sam were talking, and while going across a bridge, a huge semi-truck rammed into the side of their car. The crash, flipping the car in the air atleat twice, and taking the lives of both of the young boys. Well, they thought so! Florio Ferrente shocked Charlie back to life, just in time. Of corse, life wouldn't be the same without Sam!
Earlier in the book, Charlie and Sam made a promise to eachother that they would play catch every single day! When Sam died, Charlie thought it was impossible. But, the day of the funeral, Charlie walked back into the woods, where the two boys usually played, and Sam's spirit wondered out of the woods. When Florio shockled Charlie back to life, he was granted the gift of being able to see and interact with Sam's spirit! Make that, all spirit! Charlie believes that God granted this to him so he could keep his promise with Sam. When Sam came out of the forest, he mumered the words, "I thought we had a deal?" Charlie replied with, "We do!" Then, from that day and for 13 years, every evening at sundown, the two boys would meet there and play a game of catch.
After 13 years, Charlie was late to the forest a few nights and he could feel Sam fading. At one point, he didn't bother to show up. That was the night that Sam was prepared to move on to the next level. Charlie was furious with himself. He couldn't believe that he would never see his little brother again. After days of deep depression, acohol and drug use, and suicidal thoughts, Sam visited Charlie... of corse, Charlie didn't recognize him because Sam finally grew up when he moved on. Charlie was so glad that Sam had come to visit because he made him realize that it was time to let go and without Charlie missing a day, Sam moving on, and Sam visiting Charlie, they never would have let go. After all, Sam was in a better place.
