Connection between the book and the movie.
1. The movie starts out with Charlie and Sam sailing on ship in a race, that they end up winning. The book starts out with Charlie and Sam at home, Charlie has to watch his younger brother, Sam while his mom works overtime. They boy are trying to figure out something fun to do.
2. The book left out the dteails on Charlie's graduation and diploma he got for sailing. In the movie, they showed every aspect of his graduation; from his dimploma, to his cap and gown, to his scholarship.
3. In the begining of the movie, Charlie is a little strict with Sam and his baseball. He coaches him and makes him a better player. While telling him he btter not ever make him wait if he wants to make the team. The book didn't descibe charlie and Sam's relationship before Charlie's mom put him on "Sam Duty".
4. In the movie, Charlie never asked Sam what he wanted to do or where he wanted to go. Charlie was actaully planning on leaving and not taking Sam with him. In the book, they decide to go to the Red Sox versus Yankees game together.
5. In the book, Sam and Charlie get into a wreck on the way home from the baseball game. They were going across the "Genral Edwards Bridge", when Sam pointed out that the moon lookes a lot bigger tonight. Charlie said, "It's an optical illusion. And Sam answered with, "What's that?" Charlie said, "It's when your eyes play trciks on you". Then Charlie pretended like he was "racing" the moon so he could catch up with it. But, he didn't see the huge simi-truck coming across the bridge on their side of the road. It hit the driver's side, flipping the car atleast twice and taking the life of Charlie's younger brother, Sam. In the movie, Sam and Charlie were fighting in the car. when they stopped at a red light, something happened to the car (unstated) and while it was at a stop, a car ramed into the side of the car, sliding it across the road. Seconds later, a simi-truck ramed the underneat of the car, flipping it atleast twice. (2 flips were recorded) The tragic accident took the life of both of the young boys, or so they thought. Florio Ferentte, a Marblehead firefighter, managed to shock Charlie back to life. But, couldn't save his younger brother, Sam.
6. In both, the book and the movie, neither offically stated that Sam died in the cra crash or that Charlie was "dead" for a matter or hours. The book didn't explain Sam's funeral either, until 13 years later, then the pieces all fall into place. They just talk about how Sam and Charlie can still interact with eachother and still pay catch everyday. In the movie, they show Sam's funeral.
7. In both, the book and the movie, neither stated at the begining that Charlie had a job at Waterside Cemetary. But, in the book, they talk about Charlie closing up and looking for mourners. In the movie, you see him working and in uniform.
8. In the movie, a girl that seems to be Tess Carroll came up to Charlie and the manager and said "Excuse me, but they flowers on my father's grave need to be replanted." Charlie asked her, "What kidn of flowers do you prefer?" and Tess said, "Living." This didn't happen in the book, Charlie didn't actually talk to Tess until later.
9. In the movie, Charlie went to a store and bought a toy airplane for $97.50. Charlie claimed that it was for him, but we get the clue that he bought it so that he could play with it with Sam. The book didn't mention him going to the store and spending almost $100.00 on a toy for Sam.
10. In the movie, Charlie told Tess that he couldn't go with her on her trip around the world because he needed to be with Sam. But, in the book, Tess doesn't know about sam when she asks Charlie to come, therefore he says it's because of his job.
11. The the book and movie, Charlie spends so much time with Tess that Sam can feel Charlie forgetting about him.
12. Tess "Dies" when her boat is lost as sea and burnt to the bottom of the ocean floor for over 3 days. But in both the book and the movie, Charlie finds Tess and they gently wake her from her coma within a matter of weeks. Her memory is fuzzy at first, but the doctor said it should return to normal.
13. In both the book and the movie, Louise, Charlie and Sam's mother, moves across the country with her new husband and step-kids becuase it is too upsetting for her to stay in Marblehead, where Sam died.
