Chapter Summaries
Chapter One:
Charlie's mother has gone out of town for work and Cahrlie is in charge of watching his younger brother, Sam. The tossed around some ideas of something to do that evening. Charlie mentioned a Yankees V.S. Red Sox game. Sam asked Cahrlie, "How are we suppose to get there? Fly?" Charlie told him that they could borrow their neighbor, Mrs.Pung's car. After all, she is in Naples, Florida. (Mrs. Pung was their 73 year old neighbor with impaired vision) On the way back home, Sam pointed out that the moon looked closer; Charlie explained that it was an optical illusion- when you're eyes play tricks on you. Charlie sped up the car as if he were racing the moon; just to catch up with it. The tension rises as they cross a bridge. Sam and Charlie were having a hush conversation were a huge truck came out of nowhere. Bang!!! Right into the driver side. The truck hit the car so hard that it flipped atleast twice!!
Chapter Two:
A man named Florio found the two boys upside down, ununcauscious, tangled in seat belts. Hgot both of the young boys into an ambulance and sped off down the road. The sirene scretching "Wheeee Whoooo, Wheeee Whoooo, Wheee Whoooo". Florio looked down at the Medallion around his neck, St. Jude of Desperate Situations, and he thought "...Show me the way..."They put the sethoscope around Sam's neck and right off the bat, he knew it was time for a miracle.
Chapter Three:
Florio could see the open fracture on Charlie. It was located in his femur. Florio asked for a responce from Charlie... Nothing. Oscar, the dog, was crushed between the rear axle and the trunk. Florio was asking for a blessing. Florio checked his watch; this was the golden hour, he had lessthan 60 minutes to save them."If he could stabilize them and get them to the trauma surgeons, they might survive." (Page 18, Paragraph- 2, Lines- 3-5) A bad wreck had taken over with their car flipping twice!! They asked for a responce from Sam... Nothing. The office gently lied him down on the pavement. Sam weighs about 80 pounds, and was still wearing a baseball mit from the game. His face and neck were wet with blood. His eyes and lips were swollen. Blood flowed out of his ears. His pupils were blown. These are all very bad signs.
Chapter Four:
Chalie and Sam are communicating through their minds while uncauscious. Still, no heart beat, no responce, and in the middle of nowhere, the boys lyed on the pavement. Through their communication, they were trying to come up with a plan, so Charlie wouldn't have to go to jail, they would have to get grounded for life, and Mrs. Pung wouldn't get mad about them wrecking her car.The boys continued to faintly talk to eachothers spirits until Charlie woke up. Florio welcomed him back, with his vision still blurry, he was confuesed and lost. He didn't know where he was, but more importantly, he didn't know where Sam was or if he was okay. Just that day, Charlie had made a promise to him that he would take good care of him and always be there for him.
Chapter Five:
Tess Carrolll is planing a trip to sail around the world. Few people have ever circumnavigated the globe alone, especially a woman. Neither, climbed Mt. Everest. But, Tess wanted to be one of the 1st ten to ever make this jorney.The whole community of Marblehead was cheering for Tess and trying to help her make this jorney possible by holding fundraisers, sales, and etc.
Chapter Six:
More of an introduction to Tess Carroll. Who is Tess Carroll anyways? Tess us a beautiful, smart, and talented young girl who has a love for sailing and wants to circumnavigate the globe. Charlie works at Waterside Cemetary, where his younger brother, Sam, was buried. Walking through the cemetary, Charlie spotted his old 9th grade teacher, Mrs. Phipps at the cemetary. He helps her through her rough time, visiting her husband's grave, Mr. Phipps.
Chapter Seven:
Charlie said a miracle occured every night at dawn in the "haunted" forest at Waterside. Sam's spirit occurs in the same spot evey evening to play a game of catch with Charlie, keeping te promise they had made prior to the treterous car accident.
Chapter Eight:
Tess is on a mission to circumnavigate. This chapter explains her rout and the places she will visit. Also, this chapter explains to you all of the medicines that Charlie had to be on after Sam died. Charlie explained to some of his doctors that he could see and interact with his dead brother, Sam. But none of them believed him. They said it was from depression and he was hallucinating. Therefore, the put him on "Xanax" for anxiety; "Prozac" for depression; and "Halicon" for sleep. After months of being on medication, Charlie finally decided tp tell his doctors that his "visions" had stopped.
Chapter Nine:
Charlie finds out that Florio, the firemen who shocked him back to life, had died. His wife and him just gave birth to their son, they tried to have a baby for years. Florio took his like for a young boy and girl who were crying about wanting their cat and dog from the burning house. The roof collapsed taking the life of all three, Florio, the dog, and the cat. Charlie also let Florio know that he volunteers at the Fire Station 2-3 nights a week.
Chapter Ten:
Charlie and Tess offically meet . Charlie was working on an ordinary day and finds Tess at her father's grave. They chat for awhile and begin to like eahother. They continue to talk at the very to of the hill at Waterside Cemetary, next to Tess' dad's gravestone. Charlie insisted that he get back to work and quickly invited Tess over for dinner. She said yes and asked if she needed to vring anything along. Charlie said "No, I've got it covered." Then asked her if she wanted beer or wine and she said, "Guess". He repiled with, "Is Sam Adams okay"? After they were finised and desided to meet at the iron gates near Charlie's cottage at 8pm, Charlie drove off leaving Tess alone with her father. She carried a short conversation toward him, which drifted off, into the wind.
Chapter Eleven:
Charlie's last girlfriend, Becca Blint, was never told Charlie's secret about Sam. She was aware that he passes away and that Charlie went to the Cemetary every night at the same time, but she didn't know why. Eventually, she said that it had become ridiculous to her. Therefore, for a while, Charlie showed up a few minutes late. One night, he even showed up after dark. that's when he noticed that Sam was starting to fade. Could Charlie be loosing his gift, and his brother... FOREVER?!?! Charlie was at the store getting food for his date with Tess, when he ran into another one of his old "girlfriends". They talked for awhile and Margie, insited that Charlie kiss her cheeck, so he did. When the worker at the store called out Charlie's order, Margie knew soemthing was up. She said, "Fish for two?" "Come on, whose the girl?" "Maybe I can help..." Thats when Charlie said,"Okay, fine. What do you know about Tess Carroll?"
chapter Twelve:
Tess goes to visit her grandmother at a rest home after she was finished at the cemetary. Seems like Tess is saying goodbye to everyone before her big trip. Sometimes Tess' grandmother knows who she is and sometimes, she doesn't. Today, Nana didn't speak to Tess for awhile. Tess talked and talked, but she got no answer. IT WAS ALMOST AS IF HER GRANDMOTHER DIDN'T SEE HER AND DID'NT KNOW THAT SHE WAS THERE!!! Finally, Tess asked if she knew that she was standing right there, next to her. Then she answered, "of corse I do". But did she really think that? Or was it one of those situations where she heard Tess' voice call out to her, and she answered? Nana soon fell asleep, Tess said her goodbyes and left.
Chapter Thirteen:
Charlie is worried about being late for his date with Tess. He only has 60 miutes until she was suppose to arruve at the iron gates. Right now, Charlie and Sam were haning out. They were at the pond, searching for a turtle they had let go down there when they first moved to Marblehead. They named him "Tiny Tim". They fianlly found him! Sam climbed up from the pond and notices that Charlie is acting weird. Sam finally made the conclusion that Charlie had a date that night. He pestered Charlie until he told him who is was. Then, Charlie made Sam promise that he wouldn't go to the cottage that night, and he would keep his distance.
Chapter Fourteen:
Focusing on Tink and La. La-Dee-Da Channing. tink and La have rememberable moments. In this chapter, Tink and La talk about how Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston do yoga together, don't all stars?
Chapter Fifteen:
Charlie and Tess were hanging out in Charlie's cottage. They both share their feelings with one another, Charlie fixed an amazing meal and dessert; without even touching a cook book. Because, he loved to cook. Tess put on some music. They sit on the coach devouring the rich, creamy Choclate Cake. While drinking Sam Admas and chatting away. Charlie said, "So tell me more about this trip of yours" and Tess says, "What do you want to know?" Charlie replied with, "Well, for startes, your route". Tess started listing off places until she spotted the map on the wall. She walked over and used the tip of her index finger to trace each place she would go.
Chapter Sixteen:
Charlie and Tess had split apart and last night was the time for them to rekindle their relationship. Tess is going to a family dinner to celebrate her going away tonight at 6 p.m. Charlie on the other hand, wakes up and then goes to the cemetary. Sam was there so Charlie was asking him questions about what he did last night. Then, Charlie had to go with Hoddy. Later that evening, Hoddy was with Charlie and he got a phone call reporting a missing ship. It turns out that the ship was... "QUERENCIA", TEss Carroll's boat was missing?
Chapter Eighteen:
This chapter was a little strange. Charlie and Tess have a conversation in the cemetary. Tess can see Sam? They chatted a little while about Charlie, Sam unidentified to Tess. Then, Sam invited her to come to the woods that evening to play catch with him and Charlie. She said "Okay, sounds like fun". And then asked for his name, before taking off. He said, "Sam. Sam St. Cloud".
Chapter Nineteen:
Charlie and Sam soon realized what had happened. Although it seemed unreal! How else could Tess see and communicate with Sam, he was dead! Tess had to have died when her boat went missing. Charlie was determinded to find the ship and try to save Tess.
LOOKING FOR TESS!!! Charlie tries to tell Tink over and over that Tess is fine and she isn't missing. But, what Charlie didn't want to tell him is about thei date last night. Tess was a secret. The whole time they were on the water Charlie was questioning his date with Tess. Did she die at sea and was that her spirit? Did she know she was dead? No, she couldn't be! She was too real to be dead. This led him to more questions and to add more bad news, he wasn't going to make it back in time for Sam! This was going to be the 1st time in 13 years that he would miss, and actually that he didn't think about Sam once all day!
Chapter Twenty:
Charlie rushed to get there in time to see Sam! He ran as fast as he could, once he got there, he couldn't find Sam anywhere! He yelle and yelled and yelled. He began to worry. Finally, Sam wondered out of the woods, across the musty ground, with Oscar prancing closely behind him. Sam asked Charlie if he wanted to play catch with him but he said "No, we need to talk." Then he asked him if he had seen Tess at all. Once they got everything settled, Charlie had to try to except the fact that Tess most likely passed away on her boat that was missing. Sam, trying to calm Charlie down said, "Relx, she's coming here tonight".
Chapter Twenty One:
Tess finds herself invisible to everyone including; her dog, her Nana, and her friends. But not to Charlie St. Cloud, he could see her. Atleast, he could last night. Tess began to think, she had a conversation with Sam, atleast he said his name was Sam St.Cloud, but he has been dead for 13 years. what was going on? then, she remebered the directions Sam gave to her. She followed them, looking for Charlie. She finally found himand she knew that he would know what was going on! Charlie didn't know how much or how little Tess actaully understood at this point. So, he started at the very beginging with the ship being missing. He gave very vague details. He knew that Tess had no clue what was going on.
Chapter Twenty Two:
Tess is finally starting to understand starting to realize what is happening. She isn't very happy about it, but Sam and Charlie are helping her through this rough time. They open up to her about their promise and Charlie's gift. Also, Sam shows, her some neat tricks and her way around. Tess didn't want to leave Charlie but he promised to wait for her. One of the main reasons why Tess doesn't want to let go is because of Charlie.
Chapter 23:
Tess and Sam are still exploring together. Tess asks him if they can go to her mother's house, so off they went. There were tons of people there. People that Tess hadn't seen since her father died, two years ago. Everyone looked so sad and it was really hard for Tess to see them all this way. She really wanted to go and give her mom a big hug, but Sam encouraged her not to. After seeing everyone so upset, Tess wanted to leave. Her and Sam went to the pond and sat on a rock. Tess asked Sam a few questions, such as;
Tess- "Will it always be like this?"
Sam- "No."
Tess- "What was your hardest moment?" And Sam told her. Then she asked...
Tess- "What if one of your break the promise?" The way that Sam answered so seriously that neither of them would even think about it made Tess question.
Chapter 24:
Is there something wrong with Tess? Tess went over to Charlie's houseand when he opened the door she was standing unsatitfied with trepadation on his porch. Charlie came out and said, "Oh thank God you're here!" He tried to hug her but she pushed his arms down and said, "Charlie, I think there's something wrong with me. I couldn't even knock on the door, I tried but it didn't make any sound." As soon as Charlie heard her say this, he knew she was begining to fade. But, she didn't look like it! Charlie told Tess the new update on her ship. They said it caught on fire. It took Tess a few minutes to figure out how to reply. She remembered and told Charlie the story. She also described the very last image she remembered of the Querenicia on fire before she became unconscious, and the white the white sky with the sea closing in around her.
Chapter 25:
The last night. Tess was begining to fade even more. Now, it was actually noticable. Tess and Charlie only had one last night together, before Tess moves on. They talked for hours and hours about what life would be like together. Charlie kept twlling Tess not to worry, but how could she stop? She knew she was dead, fading, and tonight was going to be the last night to ever see Charlie, again.

Tess- "What if one of your break the promise?" The way that Sam answered so seriously that neither of them would even think about it made Tess question.
Chapter 24:
Is there something wrong with Tess? Tess went over to Charlie's houseand when he opened the door she was standing unsatitfied with trepadation on his porch. Charlie came out and said, "Oh thank God you're here!" He tried to hug her but she pushed his arms down and said, "Charlie, I think there's something wrong with me. I couldn't even knock on the door, I tried but it didn't make any sound." As soon as Charlie heard her say this, he knew she was begining to fade. But, she didn't look like it! Charlie told Tess the new update on her ship. They said it caught on fire. It took Tess a few minutes to figure out how to reply. She remembered and told Charlie the story. She also described the very last image she remembered of the Querenicia on fire before she became unconscious, and the white the white sky with the sea closing in around her.
Chapter 25:
The last night. Tess was begining to fade even more. Now, it was actually noticable. Tess and Charlie only had one last night together, before Tess moves on. They talked for hours and hours about what life would be like together. Charlie kept twlling Tess not to worry, but how could she stop? She knew she was dead, fading, and tonight was going to be the last night to ever see Charlie, again.
